Women’s Cell / Equal Opportunity Cell


Women are an integral pillar of society, known for their sensitivity, compassion, resilience, and ability to communicate effectively. In contemporary times, women are confident decision-makers, strong negotiators, and leaders across various fields.

The Women’s Cell of Government College, Ropar functions as a supportive forum for young women, motivating them to become confident, informed, and socially responsible individuals. Eminent personalities including IPS & IAS officers, district administrators, medical professionals, academicians, entrepreneurs, journalists, and social leaders are invited to interact with students and share their journeys.

These interactions help students understand real-world challenges, opportunities, and the role women play in shaping society while inspiring them to give back to the community.

Functions & Responsibilities
  1. To sensitise the campus community towards gender-related issues.
  2. To conduct orientation programmes for new students and employees.
  3. To recommend measures ensuring a safe and secure working environment for women on campus.
  4. To organise workshops and awareness programmes on the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act, 2013.
  5. To guide and advise aggrieved women on available courses of action.
  6. To perform additional responsibilities as assigned by the Principal and Higher Authorities.

On March 8, 2023, Government College, Ropar under the guidance of Principal Jatinder Singh, celebrated International Women’s Day with great enthusiasm and fervor. The event aimed to honor the achievements of women and girls in our community and to promote gender equality and women's rights with the theme' Women of Change'. The celebration was marked by a series of performances and activities, with girl students showcasing their talents through various dances and other perfomances. The guests of the event were retired principals and Amrit Kaur(PCS) who is also an alumni of the college. Dr. Harjas Kaur was awarded with the 'Achiever of the Day' award for her outstanding achievements. Various staff members participated in the event and did various activities.

The Teej festival at Government College Ropar was celebrated with the theme 'MokaTian da Mela Da, ChoudharDhiya Di' by the Postgraduate Department of Punjabi. Staff and students participated enthusiastically, enjoying Punjabi cultural songs and swinging on campus. Principal Jatinder Singh Gill emphasized preserving Punjab's heritage amidst modernization. Vice Principal Dr.HarjasKaur praised the event's organization. Competitions included folk singing, mehndi, veil tying, and bangle making, with winners like Bhavna in dance and Harshika in mehndi. On March 2, 2024, Government College Ropar, in collaboration with STATE BANK OF INDIA Under CSR Initiative t conducted a sanitary pad distribution program through its Women's Cell. The initiative aimed to improve menstrual hygiene among students by providing free pads. Supported by Punjab Government, the distribution was organized at campus hall ensuring easy access. Students appreciated the initiative for increasing access to hygiene products and educational support. It underscored Punjab Government's commitment to student welfare and health, promoting a more supportive campus environment. Future distributions are planned to sustain these efforts.

The Women’s Cell of Government College, Ropar, in collaboration with the Punjab Government, organized a significant initiative to distribute sanitary napkins to girl students. This event was part of a larger campaign aimed at promoting menstrual health and hygiene among young women. The distribution event took place on , at the college campus and saw enthusiastic participation from students and faculty members alike.Each girl student received a hygiene kit containing sanitary napkins sufficient for several months. Volunteers from the Women’s Cell and faculty members assisted in the orderly distribution process.

Post-distribution, an interactive session was held where students could share their thoughts and provide feedback on the initiative. Many students voiced their appreciation for the program, stating that it would greatly help in maintaining their menstrual hygiene, especially for those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. The feedback highlighted the positive impact of the initiative on the students' health and well-being.

. The initiative was well-received by the students and highlighted the critical role of community and government support in addressing women's health issues.

On March 13, 2024, Government College Ropar celebrated International Women's Day with the theme "Robroo". Principal Jatinder Singh Gill and Women's Cell Convener Professor MeenaKumari organized the event. Dr.PreetiYadav, Deputy Commissioner of District Rupnagar, was the Chief Guest, engaging students with her motivational journey and addressing their questions openly. Speakers including DCPO RajinderKaur, Dr.DildeepKaur from the Nursing College, and KanwaljitKaur from Sakhi One Stop Centre provided insights and solutions to student concerns. The event included distribution of prizes to winners of various competitions. Professor MeenaKumari thanked the guests, with moderation by Professors Natasha Kalra and LoveleenVerma. Principal Jatinder Singh Gill, Vice Principal Dr.HarjasKaur, Co-Convener Prof. ShaminderKaur, college staff, and DCPO office members contributed to the success of the program.
