National Service Scheme (NSS)


The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a Government of India sponsored public service programme conducted by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. Launched in 1969 during the centenary year of Mahatma Gandhi, the scheme provides students an opportunity to participate in community service and nation-building activities.

At Government College, Rupnagar, five NSS units recruit nearly 500 volunteers every year. NSS volunteers actively contribute to social awareness drives and developmental initiatives. During session 2020–21, NSS (Girls Wing) volunteer Akriti Sharma was selected for the prestigious Pre-Republic Day (PRD) Camp and participated in the Republic Day Parade.

Objectives: To develop social and civic responsibility among students.

Vision: To build youth with the spirit of service for social upliftment.

Mission: To encourage students to serve society through community engagement, identify social problems, and promote national integration and social harmony.

Components of NSS
  • NSS Programme Officer: Faculty member providing leadership and guidance
  • NSS Volunteer: Self-motivated college student
  • Community: Provides real-life exposure and learning
Classification of NSS Activities
  • Regular Activities: Village visits, old age home visits, cleanliness drives, street plays, rallies, awareness campaigns, celebration of national days, Van Mahotsav, Sadbhavana Diwas, health, hygiene, traffic awareness, organic farming, sanitation, etc.
  • Special Camping Programme: Seven-day camps organised in adopted villages or campus with community participation. At least 50% of volunteers participate.

Any student may opt for NSS provided they are not enrolled in NCC. Volunteers must complete 120 hours annually and participate in at least one 7-day special camp. NSS A, B, and C Certificates are awarded after completion of first, second, and third year respectively.

29-09-2022 Cycle Rally on 115th birth anniversary of Shaheed-e-Azam Sardar Bhagat Singh Swaran Singh Bhangu NCC, Red Ribbon Club, Youth Services Club 22 140 The martyrs of the country are our beacons of light, who inspire us to make sacrifices for the love of the country. The chief speaker of the seminar, Swaran Singh Bhangu, took inspiration from the life of Sardar Bhagat Singh ji and inspired the youth to deal with the current situations and develop feelings of patriotism. He also appealed to the students to read and consider the writings of Sardar Bhagat Singh

12-01-2023 Seminar on road safety on the occasion of National Youth Day NSS Programme Officers None 6 50 In this seminar students were made aware about the importance of road safety rules for human life and how globally, more lives are being lost in road accidents compared to people dying from diseases, the only mantra that can save these lost lives is caution and adherence to road rules. On this occasion, under the aim of creating awareness about road safety, Dr. Trivedi's PPT and video were shown. Along with this, road safety anthem was also shown.

29-08-2023 National Sports Day celebrated to commemorate the birthday of Major Dhyan Chand International Player Jasmeen Kaur Department of Physical Education  12 250 Students were made aware about the importance of sports in maintaining physical and mental health and how Sports are capable of maintaining a healthy and happy society.
16-09-2023 Awareness rally under Swachhta Hi Seva campaign NSS Programme Officers NCC 15 250 NSS Volunteers and NCC cadets went to different places in the city to create awareness about the cleanliness drive and also distributed pamphlets about prevention and diet against dengue. Under Swachhta Hi Seva Abhiyan, awareness rally, cleanliness pledge, seminar on waste management techniques, speech competition on the negative effects of pollution, debate, seminar and cleanliness song competitions were also organized.

01-12-2023 World Aids Day Dr. Malkeet Singh Maan, Assistant Director Youth Services Rupnagar Red Ribbon Club, Youth Services Club 15 250 Aids awareness activities were organized in which the volunteers participated in the poster making and slogan writing competition related to the incurable disease of AIDS and spread the message by creating a human chain to spread the information about it and prevent discrimination against AIDS patients.
12-01-2024 National Youth Day "Mera Bharat Viksit Bharat-2047" NSS Programme Officers None 10 250 The staff members and students listened to the message given by the Prime Minister of the country Shri Narendra Modi to the youth about the role of youth for a developed India through the live broadcast of the 'National Youth Festival'.
25-01-2024 National Voters Day Dr. Preeti Yadav, DC Rupnagar District Administration, Nehru Yuva Kendra, Red Ribbon Club, Red Cross Unit, NCC, Electoral Literacy Club 30 500 Volunteers were motivated to make a vote and use it wisely. The history and importance of National Voter's Day was also highlighted. Mini Youth Parliament was also organised.
22-03-2023 World Water Day NSS Programme Officers None 8 70 NSS Volunteers were encouraged to save water and appealed to create awareness in the society for proper use of this precious natural resource water.
03-06-2023 World Cycle day NSS Programme Officers NCC 6 50 Volunteers were made aware of the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals to preserve a clean environment and natural resources for future generations.
 23-3-2024 Tribute to Shaheed-e-Azam S. Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev on the occasion of Sahidi Day NSS Programme Officers NSS, NCC 12 70 Volunteers were motivated to remember the sacrifices of the martyrs and work in the interest of the country to realize their dreams.
29-05-2024 Green District Green Election Mr. Pankaj Yadav, District Youth Officer Nehru Yuva Kendra, ECO Club 10 100 Volunteers took a pledge to motivate the voters in their area to use their vote properly and to plant trees.
21-06-2024 International Yoga Day Mr.Virender Mohan Puhal, Ayurvedic Medical Officer AAYUSH Ministry, NCC, Red Ribbon Club, Red Cross Society, Mission Tandrust Punjab Unit All Teaching and Non teaching Staff 200 Volunteers were made aware about the importance of Yoga for mental and physical health.
