The Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013 is a legislative enactment of the Government of India that came into force on 9 December 2013. The Act aims to provide protection against sexual harassment of women at the workplace and ensures a mechanism for the prevention and redressal of complaints.
The Act contributes significantly to the realisation of women’s rights to gender equality, dignity, life, liberty, and safe working conditions. A secure workplace enhances women’s participation in work, leading to economic empowerment and inclusive growth.
Under the Act, the term “workplace” includes public and private sector organisations, offices, departments, educational institutions, hospitals, sports complexes, and any place visited by an employee during the course of employment, including transportation.
As an educational institution, Government College, Ropar falls within the purview of this law. Accordingly, the Principal has constituted the Anti-Sexual Harassment Committee to prevent and address complaints related to sexual harassment involving women staff and students.
The Committee plays a proactive role in promoting gender equality, equal opportunity, and a harassment-free campus environment. Any form of harassment, discrimination, intimidation, or abuse is dealt with strictly as per institutional rules and statutory provisions.
Any student found guilty of sexual harassment is liable to face strict disciplinary action, including suspension and cancellation of admission.
