Standards Club

Bureau of Indian Standard (BIS) has taken the initiative of creating Standards Clubs in educational institutions comprising teachers and students as members. Through a variety of activities under these Clubs, young talents get learning opportunities in the field of quality and standardization. Teachers have an important role in the activities of the Clubs and would serve as beacons of light, guiding and motivating students to channelize their creativity and enhance their scientific temperament. Though in its nascent stage, the Standards Clubs have already garnered prominence and are being enthusiastically promoted by educational institutions to supplement and improve the schooling experience of students and provide opportunities to better their professional and personal growth. From 2022, Government College Ropar has taken co-initiative with BIS to dessimiante konwledge and awareness about qualitites of different products as per BIS specifications.

On 02 December 2022, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) organized a Standards Writing Competition at Government College, Ropar. The event aimed to promote awareness about the importance of standards in daily life and encourage students to develop skills in standards writing.

This event include-

-A lecture on awareness about the importance of standards formed by BIS in daily life

-How to identify correct ISI & hallmark on gold jewellery.

- A written test on standards-related topics

- Prize distribution

Students from Science department participated enthusiastically, showcasing their knowledge and skills. The competition was judged by a panel of experts from BIS, who evaluated the participants' understanding of standards and their ability to express complex ideas clearly.

The event concluded with a prize distribution ceremony, where winners were awarded cash prizes. The competition fostered a better understanding of standards among students and encouraged them to contribute to the development of standards in various fields

Visit to BIS Lab Phase VII, Mohali

On 9 December 2022, students of Government College, Ropar, visited the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Laboratory at Phase VII, Mohali, as part of their academic enrichment program. The visit aimed to provide exposure to the testing and certification processes of BIS.

During the visit, students:

- Witnessed various testing facilities, including mechanical, electrical, and chemical labs

- Observed demonstrations of testing procedures for different products

- Interacted with BIS experts, who explained the significance of standards and conformity assessment

- Gained insight into the certification process and its importance in ensuring product quality and safety

The visit deepened student’s understanding of the role of standards in ensuring quality and safety in various industries. It also inspired them to pursue careers in standards development, testing, and certification. The trip was a valuable learning experience, combining theoretical knowledge with practical exposure.

On 10-03-2023, students of Government College, Ropar, accompanied by officials from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Branch Parwanoo, visited Ambuja Cement Ltd. (unit Nalagarh) in Panjhera, Nalagarh. The industrial visit aimed to provide practical exposure to cement manufacturing processes and quality control measures.

During the visit, students:

- Observed the cement production process, from raw material handling to final product dispatch

- Witnessed the implementation of BIS standards in cement manufacturing and quality control

- Interacted with Ambuja Cement Ltd. officials, who shared insights on industry-specific challenges and solutions

- Gained experience with testing and inspection procedures for cement and concrete by visiting their industrial units, labs and control room.

The visit fostered a deeper understanding of the importance of standards in ensuring quality and safety in the cement industry. It also highlighted the role of BIS in promoting conformity assessment and certification. The trip was an enriching experience, combining theoretical knowledge with practical industry exposure

On 17-10-2023, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) organized a Quality Connect Program at Government College, Ropar, to promote quality consciousness and awareness among students and faculty members. The program aimed to:

- Sensitize participants about the importance of quality and standards in daily life

- Educate them about BIS activities, standards, and conformity assessment schemes

- Encourage students to adopt quality practices in their academic and professional pursuits

- Provide hands-on experience with the Quality Connect App and online resources

The program included:

- A lecture on "Quality and Standards: Importance and Impact"

- An interactive session on "BIS Standards and Certification Schemes"

- A demonstration of the Quality Connect App and online resources
